Photo Montages - The Creation Process

Creating a Photo Montage

In creating photo montage, it's good to have a theme. This usually helps in making the selection of the photographs to be used in the montage easier.

This was created as a gift for the subject's, Gloria, 65th birthday and created as a nostalgia piece of "coming of age" in the 50's.

Seven images were selected, with each having a particular meaning:

• The trees and houses are from the neighborhood she grew up in and were used as the background image.
• The car is symbolic of the era and was the family car
• The door is of the house she grew up in and the house number is affixed above the mailbox
• The images span different ages, culminating with age 18 (the grade school pictures actually were all that were available from her younger years)
• The beach photograph symbolizes one of Gloria's favorite pastimes.
• Because the car and door photographs were only being used as symbols, the people in these photographs were removed.
• Some of the images needed restoration work that had to be completed before the images could be added to the montage.
  

Gloria's eighteen-year-old portrait is the main focal point, enhanced with delicate hand-tinting.

The flower is added as an accent and symbolizes her love for flowers
